This country remains the absolute prime location of all those who love travel. We are sure you would love to have a trip to Portugal after Covid ends.
Highlights in Portugal
Planning a trip to Portugal is incomplete without knowing all the amazing facts about the place.
The Alfama
As far back as the 5th century, Alfama was inhabited by the Visigoths, and remnants of a Visigothic town wall remain. But it was the Moors who gave the district its shape and atmosphere. In Moorish times this was an upper-class residential area. After earthquakes brought down many of its mansions (and post-Moorish churches) it reverted to a working-class, fisher-folk quarter. It was one of the few districts to ride out the 1755 earthquake.
Nightlife in Lisbon
Lisbon’s ice-cool, must-see club, glammy Lux hosts big-name DJs spinning electro and house. It was started by late Lisbon nightlife impresario Marcel Reis and is part-owned by John Malkovich. Grab a spot on the terrace to see the sun rise over the Rio Tejo, or chill like a king or queen on the throne-like giant interior chairs.
Style policing is heartwarmingly lax but arrive after 4am at weekends and you might have trouble getting in because of the crowds.
Staying at Convento dos Loios
The former Convento dos Lóios, to the right of Igreja de São João, has elegant Gothic cloisters topped by a Renaissance gallery. A national monument, the convent was converted into a top-end pousada (upmarket inn) in 1965. If you want to wander around, wear your wealthy-guest expression – or have dinner at its upmarket restaurant.
Portugal strengths are many: the climate with 250 days and 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, the sea with its surfing, the excellent food and wine products. Need we say more?
Over the centuries, Lisbon has welcomed many cultures from distant lands that have melded together to form its historic districts. Lisbon is also a modern capital that looks to the future . The recently opened spectacular museum of art and technology (MAAT) is clear evidence of this progression.
